MessYear.

Each year, MessYear brings together a coalition of partners in support of neurodivergent children and their families. Organized by NASOM Setia Alam, MessYear draws support from Fondation Rolf Schnyder, local government, universities, and community organizations, each contributing a different part of the day.

Community, Working Together.

MBSA, Selangor’s local authority, and RELA Selangor support the event’s safety. Student volunteers from MSU and UiTM Puncak Alam help run the day. Each partner takes on a different part of the event, so no single organization carries it alone.

Same Space, Not Two Separate Ones.

The name MessYear comes from “messy play,” a term used in early childhood and occupational therapy for open-ended sensory activities like paint, water, and foam. NASOM describes the day this way: “the dirtier the clothes, the bigger the memory.” The mess is not incidental. It is the point — sensory play like this supports motor skills, emotional regulation, and social communication.

MessYear brings neurodivergent and neurotypical children into the same space to play, rather than two separate ones. Playing side by side gives children and families a better understanding of each other. Parents and caregivers join in alongside their children, strengthening family bonds through a shared experience.
